I have just visited a fabulous exhibition about indigo dyeing at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. It closes on 15th April, but is going on tour to Plymouth until September and then to Brighton. Even my DH, who is not noted for his interest in textiles, found it fascinating. Check out the website for a glimpse www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk.
There is a very interesting video that shows how indigo is used in Africa, Japan and Indonesia etc and although this is heavily weighted in favour of cloth rather than yarn dyeing, there is some very interesting information about IKAT weaving. There are some lovely exhibits on show, including some lovely tapestry weaving done by Bobbie Cox and lots of pairs of jeans!!
My favourite bit was the basket containing bits and pieces that you could handle, and yes, some of them even had the "inidgo smell". Almost as good as the smell of chocolate! |
