| Can someone reccommend a spinning book for beginners? My winter project this year is going to be learning to spin, and I already have a drop spindle. I know its a hands on thing, and I plan to get some lessons and find a guild before I do too much more (I was only looking at wheels on ebay, honestly!) but it would be nice to have a basic knowledge and know what all the bits are called. |

Spinning Designer Yarns by Diane Varney was really helpful to me when I was first learning, although it isn't perfect it has some really useful information in it!
You can normally pick up a copy on Ebay and I saw a copy in Wingham Wool Works a few months ago...if you know where that is? _________________ Handspun Yarn!

I found 'The Whole Craft of Spinning' by Carol Kroll really useful as she had pictures of how to use the niddy noddy! I kept forgetting how to do it (still have to think twice if I haven't done it for a bit) and the pictures were invaluable. I think I got it from Tesco online (but don't tell anyone at downsizer )
Amazon have it too - phew

I bought a niddy noddy from wingham wool work recently, but i'm not sure i'm doing it right? The only instructions that came with it are to wind in a figure of 8. do you keep moving the centre of the middle of eight around? My winding is never very neat?

I wind my niddy noddy using a kind of rocking/twisting motion. Its very hard to describe but easy to do and I find my arm doesn't get too fatigued doing it. It does take me a couple of attempts to get it right each time though!

thanks for your replies, having looked at the instructions i realised it wasn't a niddy noddy i was thinking about. silly me!!
I have one of those and have got the hang of it. The thing i was thinking of was like a wooden stick which you use to wind balls of wool. not sure what it's called.
