Growing Woad

I was given some Woad seed this year. It is rather old so may not be all that viable. Does anybody have any growing tips, I would like to give it the best possible chance of success.

If the seed is still black, its probably viable, tends to go grey when it goes off. Personally I just sling it into the garden and see what happens, it always damps off if I try it in pots. I would plant half now and half in the spring and see what happens. It likes a deep, fairly rich soil given the chance.

I am fascinated at dyeing with Woad. I havne't tried it myself yet but really want to! I love the magic of how it changes colour in the air!
