Me neither but what with Woolfest being a camping do (and wonderwool to a certain extent) I just feel that not having card facilities might mean I don't sell as much. People don't want to have loads of cash in a tent do they? I'm going to research getting a merchant account somewhere that accepts those paper slips - you can get a paper terminal thingy for 15 quid on ebay. It's a bugger - someone should look at providing short term hire for small businesses. I'm certain there must be a way around it - I know it'll still cost but I'm determined to find the cheapest way. I went to a show recently (as a punter) where the venue provided the teminal somehow and all the traders got a receipt and got paid by the venue at a later date. I don't know how succesful it was but it's certainly an idea.
BTW - the thing that put me off the Market Traders federation is that they don't say how much it costs to join |

The Fed is about £65 per year I think, but that covers all your trading/public liability insurance as well, so I use them to cover me for trading at events, and I have insurance with the Craftsman people for online sales and demonstrating. There is some overlap but neither covered everything I needed so it was the best way forwards for me |

I have been wondering about this, I'll take cheques and cash. Not sure about mobile reception in Cockermouth.. I'm on Virgin, might ring the B&B and ask them.
The other thing is that to take credit cards at all, surely you have to have a proper Business bank account, not just an ordinary one, which means fees etc. I am using an ordinary, separate, current account at the moment. I'm registered as self employed and paying self assessment tax and NI, but I'd rather not pay for business banking unless I have to.... n |

I had to open a business account with HSBC as a buyer sent me a cheque in my business name. It's free for 12 months and it's been great to keep the tranbsactions separate so I can actually see a bit more clearly what I'm spending from my own money. To take credit cards you have to have a merchant account which is different again (and quite expensive) I'm going to look into the Nochex thing and see if it's worthwhile. I know that at some point I'm going to have to do it but maybe not next year. | ||

I used to work for Alliance & Leicester and they run a free account for businesses with a turnover of under £100k. They don't do the paper terminal thing because of fraud but I don't know if there has been anything else on offer since I left. I think their business account is a good offer though. I'll see if I can find out the number. | ||
