Hello ladies,

After all the rushing around trying to source ethical rovings, dyes etc - with a great deal of help from you all - the prospective buyer has pulled out.

The buyer interested in buying hand dyed unique rovings can 'get them cheaper shipped from China' I was only asking £3 per 100g dyed, which I thought was reasonable.

Of course, I am also concerned over the ecological/environmental affect of shipping stuff halfway round the wold and the sort of rovings produced.

Oh well, such is life - but it seems being green is not being taken seriously by some buyers at all, the pound is mightier than the planet as they say Confused

So its back to the drawing board for ways to earn a living and be self employed as well. I have ME/CFS so I cant commit to an employer, as no matter how understanding and kind they are, no-one is going to employ someone who cant reasonably guarantee to be able to work regularly.

Claire UK

PS Thankyou again for all your imput - I now have sources I can use for ethical rovings and stuff. Very Happy

Oh thats a shame Claire, it's also a shame that your buyer doesn't care about enviromental issues.

Do you have other hobbies that could be turned into a business venture?

I have ME/CFS as well - it's a bummer isn't it? Don't be put off by one un-ethical buyer Claire, there may be nmore people who want to buy ethically produced stuff out there. £3 per 100g is very price friendly in my opinion.

Yes I think you've charged a very fair price as well. What a shame. But this is what we're up against isn't it, but you never know there might be someone out there looking for your rovings - the Yarn Wench does it, so can you!

what is the point of ethically sourced rovings if you then ship them from China and how would you be sure they were ethically produced? Some people! Keep going Claire, I have just spun my first rovings (the ones I bought from you that you had dyed) and I am now thinking spinning wheels Laughing

Oh not because i was any good, no it's very 'slubby' and a real mess but it was fun! So I will do some more - only did a little ball.

Does anyone know of an onlne video of drop spindles beeing used?

I have the spin it! Book but think a moving picture might help me.

There are some really good video's and DVD's available here :-

http://www.fiber2yarn.com/catalog.php?category=Handspinning%20Video

I know they are in the US (which is maybe not ethical considering the main topic of this thread!) but I couldn't find these in th UK. I bought some of the advanced DVD's are they are really good. Friendly and quick service too.

Claire - I also have CFS, so empathise. More and more indie crafters like ourselves our now turning to selling to the buyer direct through websites, etsy, ebay and so on. It's a little time consuming yet worth the effort. The price you mentioned is very good, almost too cheap compared to some, so why not give it a go?
