Dh has made me some drop spindles out of wood he has in his workshop. He is a master joiner and can make all sorts of things eg. top whorl spindles, bottom whorl spindles - all weights, bobbins, nostepins, niddy noddys etc.

At the moment he has : oak, pear, apple, maple, mahogony, antique pine (150 years old) sycamore and lime. Please pm me or email direct for prices, any questions etc.

He also carves, veneers etc.

Thanks, Claire UK

PS He is an organ builder by trade, this is just his 'new' craft sideline since I started wanting spinning and weaving tools Very Happy

What's the difference between a top whorl and a bottom whorl?

The ones pictured are bottom whorl as the disc (whorl) is towards the bottom, the top whorl ones are the same but with the whorl near the top.

It is just a matter of preference which end you want the whorl ( I think Confused )

Please tell me if there is another reason for the different ones.

Oooh it's my birthday soon.
Could he do different sizes of niddy noddy?
Or even one which could be varied in length?
My current one gives a hank 1.5m long. If I wanted a different length, could he do that?

They look gorgeous. I would have assumed they were top whorled because of the hook, havent before seen a bottom whorled spindle with a hook! Does that make it easier/able to do sneaky thangs? I'm a bit out of touch with modern designs of spindle I must confess though, so I may be talking nonsense Very Happy

I reckon you should definately get him to make some to sell on, there is always a market for good spindles

He can make any size of niddy-noddy. I suppose he could also make interchangeable lengths for the middle bit to swop depending on the size you want at the time. What are you after?

I have the hook on the BOTTOMend to wind my leader thread on. I found that a hook on the top end caught my yarn and can cause splits so I asked him to make a groove instead, and round the end off so there are no bits to snag.

Have you got any ideas of good places to advertise our stuff?

Thanks, Claire UK

What do they weigh Claire? I'd be interested in a light weight spindle because both of mine are quite heavy.

As he makes them individually He can make any weight you like.

He is currently making me a couple for silk spinning weighing 1oz (about 25g) with a shorter spindle which is only 7" long to keep the weight down.

They would be the same price (£10+ £1.95 postage) as the larger ones as the work involved is the same.

I asked him about the niddy-noddy and he said that a shorter one would be no problem. He only works in solid wood - no veneer or MDF and they would also be made to your individual requirements so any length is possible. They would be about £15 + p&p.

As craftswomen I wish you could see his face when MDF etc or even the dreaded plywood is mentioned. You would think someone had trodden in doggy-doo Rolling Eyes Laughing

Hi Claire, if your DH doesn't mind I'd like one weighing about an ounce or less. If you pm or email me with your address, I'll get the payment in the post. It will have to be on Friday because I just about emptied my purse today sending off swap parcels! Rolling Eyes

And, yes Natalie, I am thinking of spinning silk, I just got some lovely tussah silk from Fyberspates in the post today... Laughing
